Yu Zhu is Professor of School of Geography; and Director of Center for Population and Development Research, at Fujian Normal University; He is also Professor of Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI) at Shanghai University, and leads the ADRI’s research pillar on Internal Migration and Urbanization. His research straddles the two disciplines of demography and human geography, focusing on issues relating to internal migration and urbanization. His current research involves the examination of rural-urban, inter-urban and intra-urban migration in China and its international comparison, the extent and evolution of China’s in situ urbanization and its underlying mechanism, and their related theoretical and policy implications in both China and the international context. His research has been supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Social Science Foundation of China, The Wellcome Trust and The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in UK, The International Development Research Center (IDRC) of Canada, and The Australian Research Council (ARC) etc. He has published widely both in China and internationally, including 6 books and more than 110 journal articles and book chapters. He has been on the list of Elsevier’s Most Cited Chinese Researchers for the six consecutive years of 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Yu ZHU is currently Vice-President of China Population Association; Director of the Committee on Population Geography, the Geographical Society of China; Member of Commission on Population Geography, International Geographical Union; Council Member of Asian Population Association; Member of the International Advisory Board of Population Space and Place and Asian Population studies; and Member of the Editorial Board of International Migration Review and Asian and Pacific Migration Journal. In recent years he has also served as Member of the International Advisory Board of UN Habitat’s World Cities Report (2010–2011, 2012–2013, 2015, 2020); Chair of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP)’s Scientific Panel on the Impact of Internal Migration and Urbanization in Developing Countries; Chair of Asia and Pacific Migration Research Network; Member of the first International Advisory Group of the IOM Migration Research and Training Centre. He received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from East China Normal University, and his Ph.D. Degree from Demography Program of the Australian National University.
