The webinar “What Demographers Tell Us about the COVID-19 Pandemic” was successfully held on Jan 13, 2021 by the Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI) of Shanghai University, under the framework of the Asian MetaCentre for Population and Sustainable Development Analysis. It was hosted by Dr. Guillaume Marois, associate professor from ADRI.
Four leading demographers who are working on the topic related to COVID-19 were invited to the webinar to share their latest demographic research on COVID-19. Dr. Jennifer Beam Dowd gave audiences plenty of demographic insights into COVID ranging from the intersection of population age structure and mortality to estimates of excess mortality and highlighted the opportunities for demographers to contribute going forward. Dr. Tomáš Sobotka introduced sex- and age-specific disparities in COVID-19 infections in Europe. Dr. Enrique Acosta pointed out that complementing the database with indirect measures to estimate all infections and deaths is crucial as COVerAGE data collected from COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths of more than 100 countries and 300 sub-national divisions are subject to bias for different reasons and at different scales. Dr. Samir KC talked out the importance to identify the community COVID-19 vulnerability in India which will help the government to define targeted interventions and campaigns and to be ready for the worst.
The webinar attracted more than 65 attendees from all over the world including demographic researchers, statistics officials, and students. In the coming future, the Asian MetaCentre for Population and Sustainable Development Analysis and ADRI will explore more opportunities to carry forward more webinars on the heated demographic topics and bring more insights to the academic community.
