Prof. Rong Chen published a new article entitled “Trend of postponement in marriage among young people and its impact in Shanghai” in China Youth Study, in April 2023. Professor Rong Chen is the first author of this article.

Abstract:

With the transformation and development of China's economy and society, especially the upgrading of education and the acceleration of urbanization, people's marriage behavior has also exhibited a series of new trends and characteristics, among which the most salient trend is the postponement of marriage. The postponement of marriage is also one of the core features in the second demographic transition. Based on the consecutive data of the fifth, sixth and seventh national censuses, this paper examines the trend of postponement in marriage since 2000 and the characteristics of "unmarried adults" in Shanghai. The findings show an obvious pattern of postponing marriage among young people in China during the past two decades, which is even more so in the case of Shanghai. While females tend to marry relatively earlier than males, the postponement of marriage is greater than males. While the residents without hukou tend to marry relatively earlier than those with hukou, the postponement of marriage is greater than those with hukou. Among the birth cohorts who have passed the marriageable ages in Shanghai, the proportion remaining unmarried is still lower than that in some East-Asian populations such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong, though it also shows that the later people were born, the higher the rate of the never-married. Based on the trend of postponement in marriage and the weak desire for marriage in the young cohort, and referring to the situation in this regard among the neighboring populations, it might anticipate further postponement in marriage in the future, and greater proportion remain unmarried in life in Shanghai, so as to lower the fertility level and shake the pattern of the "universal marriage and childbearing" eventually.
