Since the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015, the global socioeconomic, political and environmental contexts for achieving the SDGs have largely shifted. Rising populist and nationalism, weakening multilateral commitments, disruptive trade frictions, aggravated extreme climate events and natural disasters, increasing violent conflicts, large scale population displacement have induced big challenges and potentially impeding progress on SDGs. United Nations hosted the Expert Group Meeting on the sustainable development impacts of conflicts, climate change, disasters and population displacement on Feb. 20-21, 2019 at UN headquarter. Prof. Leiwen Jiang, Director of Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI) at Shanghai University, along with other invited experts presented at the meeting the recent trends of greenhouse gas emissions, changes in climate scenarios, and new findings in global and regional demographic dynamics and their implications on achieving SDGs.
Moreover, Prof. Jiang has also been invited as an expert to attend the 52nd Sessions of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) scheduled on April 1-5 of 2019 in New York City. CPD is one of the ten functional commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council for monitoring, reviewing and assessing the population issues and trends and providing advices and assistance to the UN systems, governments and other organization on population and development related efforts. The 52nd Session of CPD will focus on the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
