On September 17th, Professor Roberto Luis do Carmo from Federal University of Campinas (UNICAMP) visited the Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI) at Shanghai University. Professor do Carmo is a well-known Brazilian demographer and sociologist, the Deputy Dean of the Institute of Philosophy and Human Science (IFCH/UNICAMP), professor in the demography department, and research fellow of the Population Study Center (NEPO). His research areas include population-environment relations, migration, urbanization, water use and management, population-environment-health nexus, disasters, education access and the practice of teaching across different levels of schooling.
At ADRI, Prof. do Carmo gave a talk entitled “Demographic Trends in BRICS Countries.” The event was hosted by Professor Leiwen Jiang, director and leader of the population-environment and climate change pillar at ADRI. Prof. do Carmo introduced demographic and socioeconomic changes in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa under the framework of demographic transition and the urbanization process. After the presentation, there was a lively discussion among participants about the future trajectory of demographic transitions and the reasons for different rates of fertility in various countries.
