Background:
One Assistant Professor is sought to conduct research and teaching in the School of Sociology at Shanghai University. The successful candidate will be based in the migration and urbanization pillar of the Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI). The highly rated School of Sociology and Political Sciences at Shanghai University is one of only four `National Key Disciplines` for Sociology in China. The School has also been awarded the `Peak Discipline` (高峰学科) and `Double Excellence Discipline` (双一流学科) national titles. The Asian Demographic Research Institute, founded in 2015 by the School of Sociology and Political Sciences, aims to be a leading centre for demographic research in the Asia region. Currently comprised of four research pillars, funding is in place for ADRI to grow to approximately 20 research positions, to be filled by a mix of Chinese and foreign scholars. Job Description:
The Assistant Professor will develop his/her own research agenda focusing on migration and urbanization. He/she will work in collaboration with other scholars in the migration and urbanization pillar, led by Yu Zhu, investigating a range of issues on migration and urbanization, including (but not limited to) patterns of migration and urbanization; the mobility transition and the settlement transition; and international comparative studies of migration and urbanization (particularly in Asia). The Assistant Professor will be expected to develop research for publication in leading demographic journals, be capable of teaching courses on the ADRI graduate program and explore external funding opportunities.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a background in the study of migration and/or urbanization with a Ph.D. in demography, sociology, geography, economics or a related disciple. Applications from current doctoral students close to finishing their studies will also be considered. Priority will be given to candidates demonstrating a good and growing publication record in peer reviewed journals.
Conditions of Employment:
Basic employment packages follow standard Chinese government guidelines. Contract lengths are offered between two to five years with long-term renewals if performance targets are met. Start dates are negotiable. All posts include a heavily subsided apartment on the university campus and bonuses for lead-author article publications in SSCI and SCI registered journals.
ADRI will support suitable candidates with applications to Shanghai and national schemes for high-skilled researchers. These schemes further boost employment packages to match salary levels of equivalent positions in the USA or Europe. ADRI has already been successful in supporting a range of similar applications by new staff members.
