Between November 2nd and 22nd, two graduate students at ADRI, Xueting LI and Shuqiang Xu, and an ADRI Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Fatima, took part in a training workshop entitled “Demographic Analysis with Applications to Aging and Health” at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. This nineteen-day workshop was organized by the School of Population Studies at Chulalongkorn University. At the opening session, Dr. Vipan Prachuabmoh, Dean of the School of Population Studies, and Dr. Sergei Scherbov of IIASA(International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis)delivered welcoming remarks. Dr. Scherbov conducted the workshop, which consisted of three parts. The first introduced fundamental concepts of demography and the life table as demonstrated through various functions in Excel. The second combined Excel and VBA order to make demographic projections based on life tables. Dr. Scherbov explained ageing from the perspective of Remaining Life Expectancy. The third part illustrated different demographic projections under different scenarios, calculated major ageing indexes, and used data results to support and redefine indicators of population ageing.
The intensive training at Chulalongkorn University offered a good learning and exchange opportunity for ADRI participants. Not only did they deepen their understanding of fundamental concepts of demography, they also sharpened their competency in Excel and VBA to make demographic projections and calculate major population indicators. Moreover, the workshop continues exchange and cooperation between ADRI and Chulalongkorn University.
