ADRI hosted a lecture by Fabian Wagner on November 2 titled “Applied Systems Analysis in an Interconnected World: Research and Collaboration at IIASA.” Wagner is Dean of Capacity Development and Academic Training and a Principal Research Scholar in the Energy, Climate, and Environment Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Professor Chen Chen chaired the event. The lecture explored how systems analysis can inform research and decisions on complex social and environmental issues.

Wagner began by introducing IIASA’s goals, structure, and research activities. He then used recurring bus delays during rush hour to explain systems thinking. The example showed how examining relationships, patterns, and underlying structures can help researchers understand problems that persist beyond individual incidents. He discussed the relevance of this approach to transport, aging, and education, where multiple factors interact to shape outcomes.

Wagner outlined tools used in systems analysis, including network analysis, agent-based models, and optimization methods. He discussed how quantitative modeling and statistical analysis can help researchers examine complex system dynamics. Turning to practical decisions, he emphasized the importance of identifying where interventions can address a problem while considering both cost-effectiveness and equity. Examples discussed during the lecture ranged from climate change and migratory bird conservation to the synchronization of digital payment systems, illustrating the reach of systems thinking across fields.

Wagner also stressed the value of collaboration across disciplines and cultures. He concluded by introducing IIASA’s summer schools and exchange opportunities and welcomed interest from applicants with varied academic backgrounds. During the discussion, students and faculty asked about communication across disciplines and cooperation between institutions. Wagner responded to their questions and underscored the importance of interdisciplinary work in addressing global challenges.
